Classification Games

Classification is the process of sorting objects into categories.
It helps structure the thinking of children, whether or not they have special needs.
For example, a young child sees different food; they begin to distinguish between salty and sweet; then between hot and cold, liquid and solid…
Classification will reinforce what they’ve learned; it will help them fully understand language-related concepts.
Categorization also supports mathematical concepts. It will enable children to sort numbers or geometric shapes later on in school.

To start, we suggest two categories. Later, you can add a third category—and even more!

Learning will take place gradually.

At first, we should always start with an easy sorting game. Later on, the objects to be sorted can become more complex and require more thought . In fact, the possibilities for sorting games are endless.

Here are a few examples:
Sort items that sink and those that float on water.
Sort figurines based on whether they are dogs or cats.
Sort people, for example, by their occupation (firefighters and cooks) or by their family role (dads, moms, and children).
Sort by characteristics: by shape (round and square objects), texture (soft and hard objects), size (small and large objects), or temperature (hot and cold objects).
Sort loud noises from soft noises.
